ALTERNATOR NO-CHARGE
A no-charge condition has been identified on 1987 Wranglers equipped with 4.2L engines that is not caused by an alternator malfunction.
The cause of this no-charge condition may be a bent terminal (brown wire) in the female (gray) connector (A) of the 6-inch alternator jumper harness. When indications of a low battery are noted, e.g., voltmeter below normal or slow cranking, the jumper harness gray connector should be inspected.
Service correction involves inspecting the jumper harness connector and straightening the terminal as follows.
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the gray connector (A).
2. Check the terminal of the brown wire to see if it is bent.
3. If the pin(s) are bent use a needle nose pliers and straighten the bent pin(s).
4. If the pin(s) are ok, proceed to diagnosing the charging system as outlined in M.R. 279.
5. Connect the harness together.
6. Test alternator for proper performance. Refer to M.R. 279.
