LIFTGATE GLASS BREAKAGE

On some 1987 Wrangler/YJ models built prior to September 5, 1986, and VIN 2BCCE9140HB518667, the liftgate glass may ground out against the shoulder of the hinge causing the glass to break as the liftgate is closed or while the vehicle is in motion.

This grounding condition can be prevented by applying Loctite 271 on the bolts and installing an O-ring on the shoulder of the hinge to function as an insulator. The service correction is described fin the ollowing procedure.

Liftgate Glass/Assembly:

PROCEDURE

1. Open the liftgate to gain access to the inside of the hinges.
CAUTION: Support the liftgate so that it will remain in the open position when the nuts (A) are removed. Complete the repair procedure on one side of the glass before doing the opposite side.

2. Remove the nut (A).

3. Remove the bushing (B).

4. Place an O-ring (C) (0.687 in. I.D. x 0.875 in. O.D.) on the shoulder (S) of the hinge (D).

NOTE: The O-rings are a standard size and can be procured locally.

5. Install the bushing.

6. Apply Loctite 271 to the threads on the hinge shaft.

7. Install the nut with 4.5 - 6.8 N-m (45 - 60 inlbs) torque.

8. Repeat steps 2 thru 7 on the opposite side.
