Pick-Up Coil: Testing and Inspection
Ignition Schematic:
1. With the ignition in the OFF position, disconnect the distributor pickup coil connector.
2. Using an ohmmeter measure the resistance across the sensor connector terminals.
3. The ohmmeter should read 400-800 ohms at operating temperature. If resistance is not within specification replace the pickup coil. If resistance is within specification go to step 4.
4. Disconnect the 20-way connector from the Micro Computer Unit (MCU).
5. Connect a DC voltmeter to pins 3 and 5 of the MCU connector.
6. Engage the starter motor and watch for voltmeter fluctuations indicating proper pickup coil and trigger wheel operation. If no voltmeter movement is seen go to step 7.
7. Check for a effective trigger wheel, distributor not turning, shorted or open wiring between pickup coil and MCU. Repair and replace as necessary.
