Starter Motor: Service and Repair


4.0L/6-243 & 5.2L/V8-318

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect starter motor electrical connections.
3. Remove support bracket to starter retaining bolts, if equipped.
4. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the transmission line clip, if equipped.
5. Remove starter motor and shims, if used.
6. Reverse procedure to install. Reinstall any shims that were removed.

2.5L/4-150

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove exhaust clamp from bracket.
3. On automatic transmission models, remove bolt and nut from forward end of brace rod, then remove brace rod and bracket.
4. On manual transmission models, remove bolt, nut and bracket from bellhousing.
5. On all models, disconnect solenoid feed wire from solenoid, then remove the starter.
6. Reverse procedure to install.
