Fuel System - Fuel Cap Tether Breakage/Interference

Revised Fuel Cap Tether

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves an improvement to the fuel cap tether.

MODELS:
1999 - 2000 (XJ) Cherokee

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NON-LOCKING FUEL CAP AND TETHER.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A customer may experience breakage of the fuel cap tether or interference from the tether during installation of the fuel cap. Both conditions may be influenced by the location of the tether attachment to the vehicle body. A revised tether repair kit moves the tether attachment to the fuel filler door.

DIAGNOSIS:

If the above condition is present perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Open fuel filler door.

2. Carefully remove the old tether from the fuel filler cap.

3. Carefully remove the old tether from the fuel filler housing.

4. Cover the hole left by the old tether in the fuel filler housing with the push-in pin supplied in the kit.

5. Attach the fuel filler housing bracket to the inside of the fuel fill door. The bracket is to be installed on the leg of the fuel cap holder that is closest to the fuel fill door hinge. See detailed instructions supplied with the kit.

6. Attach one end of the new tether to the fuel filler cap. Connect the other end of the tether to the new bracket that is mounted to fuel fill door.

7. Verify that both ends of the tether are fully seated and that the bracket has been attached to the fuel fill door securely.

8. Close fuel filler door.
