Timing Cover: Service and Repair

TIMING BELT/CHAIN COVER(S)

REMOVAL - TIMING BELT INNER COVER
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove engine cover.
3. Remove cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
4. Remove accessory drive belt.
5. Remove cooling fan support.
6. Remove vibration damper.
7. Rotate the engine to 90 degrees ATDC.
8. Remove timing belt outer cover.
9. Remove timing belt.
10. Remove timing belt idler pulleys.





11. Using special tool VM.1085, remove camshaft sprockets (Fig. 158).
12. Remove timing belt tensioner.





13. Remove timing belt inner cover retaining bolts and remove cover (Fig. 159).

REMOVAL - TIMING BELT OUTER COVER
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove engine cover.
3. Remove cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
4. Remove accessory drive belt.
5. Remove cooling fan support.
6. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
7. Remove vibration damper.





8. Remove timing belt outer cover retaining bolts and remove cover (Fig. 160).

INSTALLATION - TIMING BELT INNER COVER

NOTE: Rotate crankshaft hub to 90 degrees ATDC, or the three O'clock position.





1. Install timing belt inner cover to engine front cover seal (Fig. 161).
2. Install timing belt inner cover to cylinder head cover gaskets (Fig. 161).
3. Install timing belt inner cover and retaining bolts. Torque 10mm bolts to 47.1 Nm 935 ft. lbs.) and 8 mm bolts to 10.8 Nm (96 inch lbs.). (Fig. 161)
4. Install timing belt idler pulleys.
5. Install camshaft sprockets. Hand tighten bolts.
6. Install timing belt and tensioner.





7. Install special tool VM.1085 between camshaft gears and tighten thumb screws to engage and retain the camshaft gears (Fig. 162).
8. Tighten the camshaft gear bolts to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) while holding the gears with special tool VM 1085 (Fig. 162).
9. Install timing belt outer cover.
10. Install vibration damper.
11. Install cooling fan support.
12. Install accessory drive belt.
13. Install cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
14. Install engine cover.
15. Connect negative battery cable.

INSTALLATION - TIMING BELT OUTER COVER





1. Install timing belt outer cover seal and cover. Torque 3 mm bolts to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.). (Fig. 163).
2. Install vibration damper.
3. Install the power steering pump pulley.
4. Install cooling fan support.
5. Install accessory drive belt.
6. Install cooling fan and fan drive viscous clutch assembly.
7. Install engine cover.
8. Connect negative battery cable.
