Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Ignition Coil: Testing and Inspection

Ignition coil

Voltage check
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect ignition coil connector.
3. Turn ignition switch to ON.
4. Measure voltage between blue wire and green wire at ignition coil connector.

Voltage: approximately 12 Volts

5. If no voltage, check main fuse, ignition switch and wire harness.

Resistance check

1. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of primary coil. Connect one lead of ohmmeter to the positive (+) terminal and the other lead to the negative (-) terminal. If not within specification, replace coil. Remember the unit has two coil assemblies, so both must be checked.

Primary coil resistance: 0.45 - 0.55 Ohm @ 68 °F (20 °C)

2. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of the secondary coil. If not within specification, replace coil. Remember that you must check resistance of both top and bottom secondary coils. If one is out of specification replace the whole unit.

Secondary coil resistance: 13 - 15 kOhm @ 68 °F (20 °C)
