Fuel System - Purge Control Solenoid Valves

SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 7 Issue 5, 2004

TITLE: Filter Equipped Purge Control Solenoid Valves

APPLIES TO: Sorento, Sedona, Amanti, Optima 2.4L

SERVICE TIP:

Purge Control Solenoid Valves (PCSV) used in Kia vehicles have been equipped with screens since the end of 2002 at which time this design change was gradually phased in across the model line. The fine mesh screen "filters" the air going into the PCSV, reducing the chance of malfunctioning because of debris getting into the valve. Note that there are currently two configurations used: MELCO Engine Management System equipped models (Sorento, Sedona, Amanti, Optima 2.4L) have a separate filter installed in the line to the PCSV, all others vehicles have the screen filter integrated into the PCSV.

Under normal circumstances the screen filters are maintenance free. Checking and/or replacing filter (or solenoid and filter) would normally only be required in cases where the system has been exposed to debris in the line between the PCSV and the evap canister.
