Fuel Pump: Service Precautions

WARNING:
Adhere to the following procedures any time the fuel system is being worked on in order to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury
:

Fuel is explosive. when working on fuel system, make sure to supply adequate ventilation to the work area. do not smoke, and keep sparks and open flames away.

1. Place a "CAUTION FLAMMABLE" sign in the work area.
2. Always wear eye protection.
3. Use caution when working near the catalytic converter to prevent the possibility of burns or fire. The temperatures within the converter can exceed 537° C (1000° F).
4. Always relieve the fuel system pressure prior to disconnecting fuel system components. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure.
5. Always disconnect the negative battery cable except for those tests where battery voltage is required.
6. Always keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near the work area.
7. Use a suitable container to store or catch spilled fuel.
8. Do not replace fuel pipe with fuel hose.
9. Plug all disconnected line fittings or hoses.
10. After making any fuel system repairs ALWAYS inspect for fuel leaks by turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position for two seconds, then to the "OFF" position for ten seconds. Again turn to the "ON" position and then check for leaks.
