A/T - Removal Precautions

SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 7 Issue 5, 2004

TITLE: A/T Removal

APPLIES TO: 1.8L Sephia/Spectra and 1.5L/1.6L Rio

SERVICE TIP:

When removing the transmission from 1.8L Sephia/Spectra and 1.5L/1.6L Rio, care must be taken during separation of the torque converter from the drive plate. If the torque converter is stuck to the drive plate, a brass punch must be used to free up the torque converter for removal. Gently tap each stud using the brass punch until the torque converter comes free of the drive plate. KMA is receiving a large number of torque converters back through the core return program with damaged threads on the torque converter studs. It appears that most of these threads have been damaged with a punch, but there have been a few with threads stripped due to incorrect thread size nuts being forced onto the studs. Torque converter cores that are returned with damaged threads will be a charge back to the dealer for the cost of a new replacement converter.
