Air Bag System - Clockspring Installation
SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 6 Issue 1, 2003TITLE: Clockspring Installation
APPLIES TO: ALL
SERVICE TIP:
Improper replacement procedures when servicing the clockspring may result in air bag warning lights or loss of steering wheel controls (horn, cruise control, audio controls). New replacement clocksprings come centered and locked with a neutral pin. Before installing a new clockspring, make sure the neutral pin is in place and steering wheel is centered with the front wheels pointed straight ahead. If the neutral pin is removed or clockspring is being reused, use the following procedure to re-center the clockspring.
Sorento and Optima:
1. Gently rotate clockspring completely clockwise.
2. Rotate clockspring counterclockwise just over one half turn and align neutral marks.
3. Rotate two complete turns counterclockwise and align neutral marks. This will be center neutral position.
All other models:
1. Gently rotate clockspring completely clockwise, neutral marks will be aligned.
2. Rotate clockspring three turns counterclockwise and align neutral marks. This will be center neutral position.
See Service Manual sections RT and BE for additional information.
