Thermostat: Service and Repair

THERMOSTAT

NOTE: Disassembly of the thermostat would have an adverse effect, causing a lowering of cooling efficiency.

1. Drain the engine coolant so its level is below thermostat.





2. Remove the water inlet fitting(A), gasket and thermostat.

1. Immerse the thermostat in water and gradually heat the water.
2. Check the valve opening temperature.
Valve opening temperature: 82 ± 1.5°C (179.6 ± 2.7°F)
Full opening temperature: 95°C (203°F)
If the valve opening temperature is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
3. Check the valve lift.
Valve lift: 8 mm (0.3 inch) or more at 95°C (203°F)
If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the thermostat.

1. Place the thermostat in thermostat housing.
1) Install the thermostat(B) with the jiggle valve upward.





2) Install a new gasket(A) to the thermostat(B).





2. Install the water inlet fitting(A).
Tightening torque: 14.7 - 19.6 Nm (1.5 - 2.0 kg-m, 10.8 - 14.5 ft. lbs.)
3. Fill with engine coolant.
4. Start engine and check for leaks.
