FRONT COIL SPRING REPLACEMENT (SC095)

This bulletin provides information relating to the replacement of the front coil springs due to possible corrosion in 2006 Kia Sedona vehicles produced from December 20, 2005 to March 20, 2006 that are currently registered in the states where heavy road salt is used. Over time exposure to water and road salt may reduce the effectiveness of the coil's protective coating thereby resulting in corrosion of the coil springs. Owners of these vehicles currently registered in the 21 states which are known to use heavy amounts of road salt are being notified to schedule an appointment with the nearest Kia dealer to have both front springs replaced with improved ones. The 21 states are: CT, DC, DE, IA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, WI, WV.





Verify that the vehicle is in the affected range by VIN and production date and follow the instructions as outlined.

Service Procedure





1. Open the hood.

Remove both windshield wiper blade assemblies (L/R) (A) by removing mounting nuts.

Windshield Wiper Mounting Nut
Tightening Torque: 2O~23 lb-ft
(28~32 Nm)





2. Remove the weather strip and the cowl top cover (B) after removing all the fasteners.





3. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor connectors and windshield washer tube.

Remove the windshield wiper motor and linkage assembly (C) by removing four (4) bolts.

Windshield Wiper Motor and linkage Assembly Tightening Torque: 5.0~7.9 lb-ft (7~11 Nm)





4. Raise the vehicle up on a lift.





5. Remove the front wheels to gain access to the front strut assembly.

Wheel Tightening Torque:

65~79 lb-ft (90~110 Nm)





6. Remove the brake hose bracket from the front strut assembly.

Remove the speed sensor and wire bolts from the front knuckle.

Brake Hose Bracket Tightening Torque:
5~8 lb-ft (7~11 Nm)

Remove the front stabilizer link (D) from the strut assembly.

Front Stabilizer Link Tightening Torque:

72~87 lb-ft (100~120Nm)





7. Remove the strut upper mounting nuts.

Strut Upper Mounting Nuts Tightening Torque: 33~43 lb-ft (45~60 Nm)





8. Separate the front strut assembly (E) from the front knuckle by loosening the bolts and nuts.

Front Knuckle Tightening Torque:

72~87 lb-ft (100~120 Nm)





9. Remove the front strut assembly from the vehicle.





10. Use appropriate spring compressor to compress the coil spring and then disassemble strut assembly. Remove the coil spring from the front strut assembly.

Strut Nut Tightening Torque:

43~51 lb-ft (60~70 Nm)

Upper Strut Spring Seat Adjustment Procedure:





11. When assembling the upper strut spring seat to the coil spring the reference mark on the upper strut spring seat should be located as shown in the illustration on the right.

The plate (G) has been stamped to identity its rotational position relative to the strut. Refer to illustration on the right for the location of the proper reference mark (F) on top of the upper spring seat assembly's outer edge. The baseline mark should be in the midpoint of the back of the steering knuckle bracket mount (H).





12. Adjust the upper spring seat as indicated.

Left upper spring seat:

The reference mark should be located about 15 mm counterclockwise of the baseline.

Right upper spring seat:

The reference mark should be located at the baseline.

Install all removed components in reverse order of removal.

13. Perform the same procedure to opposite side.
