Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION
1. WARM UP ENGINE
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.




2. CONNECT LEXUS HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBDII SCAN TOOL
- Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.
- Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3.
- Please refer to the LEXUS hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator's manual for further details.

3. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT TO ENGINE
- Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, remove the 2 cap nuts and V-bank cover.




- Connect the timing light pickup clip to the the GREEN lead wire for the No.4 ignition coil.

HINT: You must use a timing light that can detect the primary signal.

4. CHECK IDLE SPEED
- Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
- Check the idle speed.

Idle speed: 700 ± 50 rpm

5. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING



- Using a jumper wire or SST, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1. (SST 09843-18020)




- Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
8° - 12° BTDC @ idle
(Transmission in neutral position)


- Remove the SST from the DLC1.

6. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING
- Recheck controlled ignition timing.

7° - 24° BTDC @ idle
(Transmission in neutral position)


HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 7° and 24°.

7. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT FROM ENG1NE
- Remove the timing light.
- Using a 5 mm hexagon wrench, install the V-bank cover with the 2 cap nuts.

8. DISCONNECT LEXUS HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBDII SCAN TOOL
