Repair Procedure

HINT:
For details about removal of each part, refer to the Technical Information System (TIS): 2003 GX 470 Repair Manual: Instrument Panel/meter: Instrument Panel Safety Pad Sub-assy: Replacement.

1. How to Check if the Lexus Link System Is Functioning

A. Performing the check when the ignition switch is turned ON (Reference):

a. Turn the ignition switch OFF and turn it ON again. Start the engine. Three possible audio messages can be output from the vehicle depending on the status of the Lexus Link system.

i. If the customer has a current Lexus Link subscription (Active Mode), an English message will play: "The Lexus Link system is active."

ii. If the customer has an expired Lexus Link subscription (Dealer Mode), an English message will play: "The Lexus Link system is not active. To activate your Lexus Link system, press the Service button now."

iii. If the Lexus Link system is initial mode* (Factory Mode), a Japanese message (with a female voice) will play: (You will hear a Japanese message with a female voice.) * Mode has not been switched yet.

b. Wait for 30 seconds. Listen for error messages.

B. Performing the diagnosis check (check before and after servicing the Lexus Link system).

a. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

b. Press and hold the "play" button or the "volume up" button. With the button pressed, turn the ignition switch ON, OFF, ON, OFF and then ON within 15 seconds.

^ If the voice message, "System OK," is confirmed, there is no problem with the Lexus Link system.

^ If an error message is heard, refer to the service manuals.

C. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.

CAUTION
BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL:
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and wait for approximately 30 seconds. Then, disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery and wait for 90 seconds. Then you may start working on the vehicle. Disconnecting the negative (-) terminal cable within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position will activate the Lexus Link system using the back-up battery and cause the system to make an emergency call. Working on the vehicle within 90 seconds after the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected may deploy the SRS using the SRS's back-up power source.

D. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery.

2. Remove Front Door Scuff Plate LH





Using a screwdriver, disengage the 6 claws and remove the scuff plate.

HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

3. Remove Front Floor Footrest LH





A. Using the taped screwdriver, disengage the 2 clips and remove the footrest.

B. Disengage the clips from the floor panel, and then remove the 2 clips from the footrest.

4. Remove Cowl Side Trim Board LH

A. Remove the cap nut.





B. Using the taped screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and remove the trim board.

5. Remove Instrument Panel Under Cover Sub-Assembly No. 1.





A. Remove the screw.

B. Disengage the 2 clips and the claw, and then remove the instrument panel under cover sub-assembly No. 1.

6. Remove Instrument Cluster Finish Panel Ornament





A. Disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel ornament.

7. Remove Instrument Panel Finish Plate





A. Remove the instrument panel finish plate.

8. Remove Instrument Panel Finish Lower Panel





A. Remove the 3 bolts.

B. Disconnect the hood lock control cable and the fuel lid lock control cable.

C. Disengage the 4 clips.

D. Disconnect the connectors and remove the instrument panel finish lower panel.

9. Remove Console Upper Panel Garnish No. 2.





A. Using the screwdriver, disengage the 3 clips and remove the console upper panel garnish.

10. Remove Console Upper Panel Garnish No. 1.

A. Remove the shift lever knob and selector knob.





B. Using the taped screwdriver, disengage the 4 clips and remove the console upper panel garnish.

11. Remove Console Panel Upper Assembly





A. Disengage the 11 clips and remove the console panel upper assembly, then disconnect the connectors.

12. Move Rear Console Box Assembly





A. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 screws.

B. Move the rear console box rearward approximately 100 mm so that the bolts of the console box lower can be removed.

13. Remove Console Upper Panel Garnish Front





A. Disengage the 5 clips and remove the console upper panel garnish front, then disconnect the connectors.

14. Remove Console Box Lower





A. Remove the 2 bolts.

B. Remove the 2 screws and the console box lower.

15. Remove Instrument Panel Junction Block





A. Remove the 2 nuts and bolts.

B. Pull the instrument panel Junction Block so that the repair wire can pass behind the instrument panel Junction Block.





16. Set Repair Wire To Instrument Panel

A. Set the repair wire to the instrument panel as shown in the illustration.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the repair wire.





17. Connect Connectors

A. Disconnect the IG connector (male) from the back of the instrument panel Junction Block and connect it to the repair wire connector (female).

B. Connect the repair wire connector (male) to the instrument panel Junction Block.

C. Disconnect the floor wire harness connector (male) from the instrument panel wire harness and connect it to the repair wire connector (female).

D. Connect the repair wire connector (male) to the instrument panel wire harness connector (female).

18. Fasten Repair Wire





A. Fasten the repair wire to the instrument panel with a cable tie and vinyl tape as shown in the illustration. Attach the cable ties to the white tape and black tape parts of the repair wire.

19. Cut Cable Tie





A. Cut off the cable tie, as shown in the illustration.

20. Check SRS Diagnosis About 6 seconds after turning the ignition switch ON, check that the SRS warning light in the combination meter turns off.

If the SRS warning light flashes or stays ON, the connector could be disconnected or a wire in the wire harness could be broken or short circuited. Check the applicable circuit for the DTC reading (refer to Repair Manual).

21. Check Lexus Link System Check the Lexus Link system (see step 1).

22. Install Instrument Panel Junction Block

23. Install Console Box Lower

24. Install Console Upper Panel Garnish Front

25. Install Rear Console Box Assembly

26. Install Console Panel Upper Assembly

27. Install Console Upper Panel Garnish No. 1

28. Install Console Upper Panel Garnish No. 2

29. Install Instrument Panel Finish Lower Panel

30. Install Instrument Panel Finish Plate

31. Install Instrument Cluster Finish Panel Ornament

32. Install Instrument Panel Under Cover Sub-Assembly No. 1

33. Install Cowl Side Trim Board LH

34. Install Front Floor Footrest LH

35. Install Front Door Scuff Plate LH

36. Initialize Body System

When disconnecting the negative (-) battery terminal, initialize all the systems after the terminal is reconnected. (Refer to the Technical Information System [TIS], 2004 Lexus GX 470 Repair Manual.)
