STEERING VIBRATION AND DRIVELINE VIBRATION/DRONE

'03 - '04 GX 470

Introduction

Some 2003 - 2004 model year GX 470 vehicles may exhibit a steering vibration and/or a front driveline drone when operated under certain conditions. The following procedure has been developed to improve the condition.

^ 2003 - 2004 model year GX 470 vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown below.

Applicable Warranty*:

This repair is covered under the Lexus Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure





1. Remove Engine Under Cover Front. (See Figure 1 for location.)

2. Remove Engine Under Cover Sub-assembly No. 1. (See Figure 1.)

A. Remove the 4 bolts and engine under cover sub-assembly No. 1.

3. Remove Engine Under Cover Assembly Rear. (See Figure 1.)

A. Remove the 4 bolts and engine under cover assembly rear.





4. Remove Front Fender Splash Shield. (See Figure 4.)

A. Remove the 5 clips and the front fender splash shield.








5. Remove Steering Sliding Yoke. (See Figures 3 and 5.)

A. Remove the 2 bolts from the steering sliding yoke.

B. Slide the steering sliding yoke up and separate it from the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly No. 2.

C. Pull down the steering sliding yoke from the steering intermediate shaft assembly to remove.





6. Remove Steering Intermediate Shaft Cover. (See Figures 3 and 6.)

A. Remove the 4 bolts and steering intermediate shaft cover.





7. Remove Steering Intermediate Shaft No. 2. (See Figures 3 and 7.)

A. Align the matchmarks on the power steering gear assembly and the intermediate shaft No. 2.

B. Remove the bolt and intermediate shaft sub-assembly No. 2 from the power steering gear assembly.

8. Install New Steering Intermediate Shaft No. 2. (See Figures 3 and 7.)

A. Align the matchmarks on the power steering gear assembly and the intermediate shaft No. 2.

B. Install the steering intermediate shaft No. 2 to the steering gear box with the bolt.

Torque: 36 N.m (370 kgf.cm, 26 ft.-lbf)





9. Install Steering Intermediate Shaft Cover. (See Figures 3 and 8.)

A. Install the steering intermediate shaft cover with the 4 bolts.

Torque: 5 N.m (50 kgf.cm, 44 in..lbf)





10. Install New Steering Sliding Yoke. (See Figures 3 and 9.)

A. Install the steering sliding yoke to the steering column assembly and slide it upward.

B. Install the steering sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft No. 2 with the 2 bolts.

NOTE:
Torque the sliding yoke bolts when the vehicle is resting on the ground.

Torque: 36 N.m (370 kgf.cm, 26 ft.-lbf)

11. Install Front Fender Splash Shield.





12. Replace original Front Differential Support No. 1 with new Front Differential Support No. 1. (See Figure 2.)

13. Install Differential Dynamic Damper to the new Front Differential Support No. 1 using the two new bolts. (See Figure 2.)

14. Install Engine Under Cover Assembly Rear.

15. Install new Engine Under Cover Sub-assembly No. 1.

NOTE:
Do not use the Engine Under Cover Sub-Assembly No. 1 which was installed to the vehicle.

16. Install Engine Under Cover Front.

17. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead and that the steering wheel is centered.
