SHIFT LEVER ASSY (ATM)
OVERHAUL
1. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
2. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSY
a. Remove the shift lever knob sub-assy.
3. REMOVE CONSOLE PANEL UPPER FRONT
4. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER
5. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
6. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE RH
7. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSY RH
8. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM SUB-ASSY LH
9. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY LOWER
10. REMOVE GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR ASSY
11. REMOVE FLOOR CARPET COVER CENTER LH
12. REMOVE FLOOR CARPET COVER CENTER RH
13. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER CENTER
14. SEPARATE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY
a. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the cable end from the shift lever assy.
b. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assy counterclockwise and remove the stopper cap.
c. Disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the shift lever assy.
15. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER ASSY
a. Disconnect the pattern select switch connector, the shift rock control computer connector and the indicator lamp wire connector.
b. Remove the 4 nuts and disconnect the shift lever assy from the vehicle.
16. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Using a screwdriver, remove the position indicator housing from the shift lever assy.
17. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON COVER
a. Using a small screwdriver, remove the shift lock release button cover from the position indicator housing assy.
18. REMOVE PATTERN SELECT SWITCH ASSY NO.1
a. Remove the pattern select switch assy No.1 from the position indicator housing.
19. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE LINK NO.1
a. Remove the shift lock release link, spring and cover from the position indicator housing.
20. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR LIGHT GUIDE
a. Remove the indicator lamp wire sub-assy from the shift lever assy.
b. Using a small screwdriver, remove the position indicator light guide from the shift lever assy.
21. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
a. Remove the position indicator slide cover from the position indicator housing lower.
22. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
a. Remove the position indicator slide cover No.2 from the position indicator slide cover.
23. REMOVE POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING LOWER
a. Remove the position indicator housing lower from the shift lock control unit.
24. REMOVE INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSY
a. Gate shift lever:
1. Remove the connector from the shift lever assy.
b. Shift lever with multi-mode automatic transmission:
1. Remove the connector from the shift lever assy.
2. Using a screwdriver, release the stopper of the connector.
3. Using a small screwdriver, disengage the locking lug of terminals (1) and (6), and pull the terminals out from the rear.
25. INSTALL INDICATOR LAMP WIRE SUB-ASSY
a. Shift lever with multi-mode automatic transmission:
1. Connect the 2 terminals of indicator lamp wire harness to the connector of transmission control switch.
2. Install the connector to the shift lever assy.
b. Gate shift lever:
1. Install the connector to the shift lever assy.
26. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING LOWER
a. Install the position indicator housing lower to the shift lock control unit.
HINT: Engage the claws securely.
27. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
a. Install the position indicator slide cover No.2 to the position indicator slide cover.
28. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR SLIDE COVER
a. Install the position indicator slide cover to the position indicator housing lower.
NOTICE: Install the position indicator slide cover No.2 with the boss facing the rear of the vehicle.
29. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR LIGHT GUIDE
a. Install the position indicator light guide to the position indicator housing lower.
HINT: Engage the claws securely.
b. Install the indicator lamp wire sub-assy to the shift lever assy.
30. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE LINK NO.1
a. Apply MP grease to the shift lock release link and spring.
b. Install the shift lock release link, spring and cover.
31. INSTALL PATTERN SELECT SWITCH ASSY NO.1
a. Install the pattern select switch assy No.1 to the position indicator housing.
32. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON COVER
a. Install the shift lock release button cover to the position indicator housing.
33. INSTALL POSITION INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Install the position indicator housing to the shift lever assy.
HINT: Engage the claws securely.
34. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER ASSY
a. Install the floor shift assy with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
HINT: Tighten them in the order, A, B, C and D.
NOTICE: Be careful not to put the wirings of the indicator lamp or the shift lock system between the floor shift assy and the floor while installing the floor shift assy.
b. Install the pattern select switch connector, the shift lock control computer connector and the indicator lamp wire connector.
35. CONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSY
a. Connect the socket of the transmission control cable assembly to the shift lever assy.
b. Connect the control cable end to the shift lever assy.
c. Push the stopper cap to the socket as shown in the illustration.
d. Turn the socket of the transmission control cable assy clockwise and install the stopper cap.
NOTICE:
^ To prevent torsion of the inner cable, the end with the eye should face up.
^ Push the cable end to the bottom of the pin.
^ Confirm that the connection between the socket and the shift rock control unit is fixed.
36. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSY
a. Install the shift lever knob sub-assy.
37. INSTALL BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
38. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION
39. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION
a. Loosen the nut on the control shaft lever.
b. Push the control shaft fully downward.
c. Return the control shaft lever 2 notches to the N position.
d. While pushing the control cable end up with the shift lever in the N position, install it to the control shaft lever with the nut.
Torque: 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE:
^ If the control cable end is excessively pushed up, the shift lever can not be adjusted.
^ When tightening the nut, confirm that the control cable is properly stretched.
e. Start the engine and make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting the lever from the N to D position and moves rearward when shifting it to the R position.
