Introduction





Some RX 330 drivers may experience rattle noises from the multi-panel sliding roof (moon roof) in the open position while driving. The drive rail sub-assemblies have been updated to improve this condition. Please follow the directions provided when replacing the drive rail sub-assemblies.

^ 2004 model year RX 330 vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

This repair is covered under the Lexus Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicles in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

Replace Drive Rail Sub-Assemblies.





1. Remove Roof Headlining Assembly (See Technical Information System [TIS] 2004 RX 330 Repair Manual: Exterior/Interior Trim)

2. Remove Roof Drip Side Finish Moulding LH (See TIS: Exterior/Interior Trim)

3. Remove Roof Drip Side Finish Moulding RH (See TIS: Exterior/Interior Trim)

4. Remove Sliding Roof Side Garnish LH

A. Remove the 2 screws and side garnish.

5. Remove Sliding Roof Side Garnish RH

A. Remove the 2 screws and side garnish.

6. Remove Sliding Roof Glass Sub-Assembly

A. Using a torx wrench (T25), remove the 12 screws.

B. Gradually remove the sliding roof glass from the front side.

7. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Front Mounting Bracket LH

A. Remove the 4 bolts and front bracket.

8. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Front Mounting Bracket RH

A. Remove the 4 bolts and front bracket.

9. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Center Mounting Bracket LH

A. Remove the 5 bolts and center bracket.

10. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Center Mounting Bracket RH

A. Remove the 5 bolts and center bracket.

11. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Rear Mounting Bracket LH

A. Remove the 5 bolts and rear bracket.

12. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Rear Mounting Bracket RH

A. Remove the 5 bolts and rear bracket.

13. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Sub-Assembly

A. Disconnect the drive gear wire harness connector.





B. Remove the 18 nuts and housing.

NOTE:
As the housing is very heavy, work must be done by 2 or more persons together.

14. Remove Sliding Roof Drive Gear Sub-Assembly

A. Remove the 2 bolts and drive gear

15. Remove Sunshade Trim Sub-Assembly.

16. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Panel





A. Remove the 16 screws, 14 nuts and housing panel.





17. Remove Sliding Roof Housing Center Frame

A. Remove the 12 nuts and center frame.

18. Remove Sliding Roof Drive Cable LH

A. Pull out the drive cable.

19. Remove Sliding Roof Drive Cable RH

A. Pull out the drive cable.





20. Install New Drive Rail Sub-Assembly to Sliding Roof Housing Panel.

NOTE:
As the housing is very heavy, work must be done by 2 or more persons together.

A. Install the sliding roof drive cables RH and LH to the sliding roof housing panel.

B. Temporarily tighten the 16 mounting screws and 14 nuts for the sliding roof housing panel.

C. Completely tighten the 16 mounting screws and 14 nuts for the sliding roof housing panel, and the 12 mounting nuts for the roof center frame.





D. After the sliding roof housing panel is completely tightened, pass the sliding roof cable guide casing through the frames of the sliding roof drive cables RH and LH.

NOTE:
Use a silicone paste lubricant or equivalent to lightly coat the cables before installation.

21. Adjust Fully Closed Position





A. Using a screwdriver, slide the drive cable of the sliding roof to align the matchmarks.

HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

22. Adjust Sliding Roof Glass Sub-Assembly





A. Gradually adjust the sliding roof glass from the front side.

23. Install Sliding Roof Glass Sub-Assembly

A. Using a torx wrench (T25), install the glass with the 12 screws.

24. Check For Water Leaks

A. Adjusting the sliding roof, check that there is no water leak. If a leak is found, readjust the sliding roof.

25. Reset Sliding Roof Position (See TIS: Diagnostics: Sliding Roof System: Precheck).

26. Install Roof Headlining Assembly (See TIS: Exterior, Interior Trim).
