Front Axle Hub

FRONT AXLE HUB

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
2. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
3. REMOVE FRONT DISC





4. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
a. Using a dial indicator, check for looseness near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at right angles to the measurement surface.

If looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the bearing.





5. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB RUNOUT
a. Using a dial indicator, check for runout on the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at right angles to the measurement surface. If runout exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub.

6. INSTALL FRONT DISC
7. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
8. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL





2. DISCONNECT SPEED SENSOR FRONT (for 2WD)
a. Disconnect the speed sensor connector from the speed sensor front.

NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
^ Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.





3. SEPARATE SPEED SENSOR FRONT (for 4WD)
a. Remove the 2 bolts, and separate the speed sensor from the steering knuckle.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the speed sensor. Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.





4. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB NUT (for 4WD)
a. Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the front axle hub nut.
SST 09930-00010

NOTICE: Release the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.

b. While applying the brakes, remove the front axle hub nut.





5. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the brake caliper assembly.

NOTICE: Use a wire or an equivalent to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.

b. Remove the caliper plates No. 1 from the brake caliper.

6. REMOVE FRONT DISC
7. SEPARATE LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY FRONT (for 4WD)
8. SEPARATE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)





9. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
a. Remove the 4 bolts, front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover.





10. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
a. Using a plastic hammer, separate the front drive shaft assembly from the front axle hub.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot.

b. Remove the 4 bolts, front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover.

INSTALLATION





1. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 2WD)
a. Install the front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.)





2. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
a. Install the front axle hub sub-assembly and front disc brake dust cover with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the front drive shaft assembly to the front axle hub sub-assembly.

NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the front drive shaft boot.

3. INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY (for 4WD)
4. INSTALL LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY FRONT (for 4WD)
5. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT (for 4WD)
a. Using the socket wrench (30 mm), install a new front axle hub nut.
Torque: 294 Nm (2,998 kgf-cm, 217 ft. lbs.)

HINT: Stake the nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps.

6. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
7. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB RUNOUT
8. INSTALL FRONT DISC





9. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
a. Install the brake caliper assembly and caliper plates No. 1 to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the front brake hose when installing the front disc brake caliper.
^ Make sure that there are no foreign objects or damage to the threads of the bolts.
^ Do not overtighten the bolts because the steering knuckle is made of aluminum and may be damaged.





10. INSTALL FRONT AXLE HUB NUT (for 4WD)
a. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the axle hub nut.





11. CONNECT SPEED SENSOR FRONT (for 2WD)
a. Connect the speed sensor connector to the seed sensor front.

NOTICE: Do not twist the sensor wire.





12. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR FRONT (for 4WD)
a. Install the speed sensor to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.
Torque:
Bolt (A) 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.)
Bolt (B) 8.5 Nm (87 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.)

NOTICE:
^ Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
^ Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
^ Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the speed sensor.

13. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

14. INSPECT AND ADJUST FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT (for 4WD)
15. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
