Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Brake Fluid: Testing and Inspection

BRAKE SYSTEM (OTHER): BRAKE FLUID: ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

1. CHECK FLUID LEVEL IN RESERVOIR

(a) When inspecting or refilling with the engine switch off, depress the brake pedal 40 times or more (there will be less pedal resistance and the pedal stroke will lengthen), and then add fluid until the fluid level is at the MAX line.
HINT:
When the engine switch is turned on (IG), fluid is sent to the accumulator causing the fluid level to decrease 10 mm (0.394 in.) from the level when the engine switch is off (this is normal).

Brake Fluid:
SAE J1703 or FMVSS NO. 116 DOT3
