TRANSMISSION - 5R55N - FLUID LEAK AT
TRANSMISSION FLUID PAN DRAIN PLUG

ISSUE

Some vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions may exhibit a fluid leak around the fluid pan drain plug. This leak is due a condition with the fluid pan cinch nut not being fully compressed.

ACTION

Verify that the condition exists. Check the fluid condition. If the fluid is burnt, internal transmission damage may be present, and additional repairs or replacement of the transmission may be required. If the fluid condition is OK, a sealing washer will need to be installed. If the pan already has a washer and it is leaking, remove and install a new washer. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Use the following procedure to correct the leak at the fluid pan drain plug. If other repairs are required, follow normal service procedures.

1. Perform the Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill procedure, found in section 307-01, In-Vehicle Repair.





2. While the drain plug is removed, remove the 0-ring from the fluid pan drain plug and discard (Figure 1).





3. Install a NEW Sealing Washer (2W4Z-6734-AA) onto the fluid pan drain plug (Figure 2).

4. Allow the transmission to drain.

5. Install drain plug, with the new sealing washer and Tighten to 26 N.m (19 Lb-in.).

6. Continue to complete the Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill procedure, found in section 307-01, In-Vehicle Repair.

7. Wipe off any excess fluid from around the drain plug and check for leaks to verify the repair.
