Valve clearances on these engines may be measured between rocker arm and valve stem or between rocker arm and camshaft. If measuring valve clearance from valve side, set intake and exhaust valve clearance to .012 inch. If measuring valve clearance from camshaft side, set intake and exhaust valve clearance to .009 inch.

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature, then shut engine off.
2. Position No. 1 piston at top dead center compression stroke, then adjust the following valves: intake nos. 1 and 2; exhaust nos. 1 and 3.
3. On all models, rotate engine 360° and adjust remaining valves.
4. Tighten locknuts, then recheck valve clearances.
