EGR Valve Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1. Warm up engine to operating temperature, and then stop the engine.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. Plug the hoses of the idle compensator, thermo sensor, and the reed valves.
4. Disconnect the vacuum sensing tube from the EGR valve, and plug the tube.
5. Connect a vacuum pump to the EGR valve Fig. 13.
6. Start the engine and run it at idle speed.
7. Apply vacuum with a vacuum pump. If the engine becomes rough or stops when the vacuum exceeds 50 mm-Hg (1.97 in-Hg), The valve operates properly.

8. Disconnect the position sensor connector.
9. Connect an ohmmeter to position sensor connector as in Fig. 14. If the meter shows the following resistance, Fig. 15, the position sensor is OK.
