Fail-Safe Function

Fail-Safe Function Inspection:

1. Warm engine to operating temperature.
2. Turn all electrical loads "OFF."
3. Disconnect distributor vacuum unit hose and plug.
4. Connect a tachometer and timing light.
5. Run at idle and check that timing is within specification at 12° ± 1°.
6. Disconnect service connector (White: 1-pin) at ECU.
7. Disconnect knock sensor connector and check that timing retards.
8. Reconnect knock sensor connector and check that timing returns to specification.
9. Reconnect vacuum hose.
10. If timing does not change, check knock sensor as described in this section. Also check for faulty connections, open or shorted wires, etc.
