Knock Sensor: Description and Operation

The knock control system operates in conjunction with the ignition system. If detonation occurs, the system functions to retard timing until pinging is eliminated. This system consists of a knock sensor and knock control unit. When knock occurs, the condition is detected by the knock control unit and relayed to the ECU. The ECU acts to retard timing until knock is eliminated. The knock sensor is located on the engine block below the intake manifold. The knock control unit is located near the center of the firewall.
