Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Valve & Valve Guide

1. Inspect each of the valves for damage, bending or scores. Replace as required.
2. Check valve head margin thickness. Margin thickness should be .039 inch (1.0mm) for intake or .059 inch (1.5mm) for exhaust. If thickness is less than specification, replace valve.
3. Measure valve length. Valve length should be within 4.366-4.421 inch (112.29-112.69mm) for intake or 4.465-4.481 inch (113.42-113.82mm) for exhaust. If length is not within specifications, replace valve.
4. Measure valve stem diameter. Valve stem diameter should be within .274-.275 inch (6.97-6.98mm) for intake or .274-.275 inch (6.97-6.98mm) for exhaust. If length is not within specifications, replace valve.
5. Measure oil clearance by subtracting outer diameter of valve stem from inner diameter of valve guide. Replace valve or valve guide, if clearance exceeds .0024 inch (.060mm) for intake or .0026 inch (.065mm) for exhaust.
