Throttle Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Throttle Sensor Testing:






1. Disconnect sensor connector.
2. Check continuity between terminals with appropriate feeler gauge inserted between throttle stop screw and stop lever as described on image chart.
3. If correct specifications cannot be obtained, adjust sensor. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
4. If adjustment does not result in correct specifications, replace sensor.

CHECK "IDL" SIGNAL

Throttle sensor "IDL" signal can be checked at ECU terminal 1N, ignition "ON." With accelerator pedal released, voltage should be approximately 0V. With pedal depressed, voltage should be approximately 12V.

If terminal voltage is always approximately 0V, check for:

1. Sensor out of adjustment.
2. Short circuit in wiring from ECU terminal 1N to sensor.
3. ECU malfunction.

If terminal voltage is always approximately 12V, check for:

1. Sensor out of adjustment.
2. Open circuit in wiring from ECU terminal 1N to sensor.
3. Open circuit in sensor ground connection.

CHECK "POW" SIGNAL

Throttle sensor "POW" signal can be checked at ECU terminal 2L, ignition "ON." With accelerator pedal released, voltage should be approximately 5V. With pedal fully depressed, voltage should be approximately 0V.

If terminal voltage is always approximately 0V, check for:

1. Defective sensor.
2. Short circuit in wiring from ECU terminal 2L to sensor.
3. Bad ECU connection.
4. ECU malfunction.

If terminal voltage is always approximately 5V, check for:

1. Sensor out of adjustment.
2. Open circuit in wiring from ECU terminal 2L to sensor.
3. Open circuit in sensor ground connection.
