Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Igniter is a PCME controlled switching device that turns the ignition coil primary circuit ON and OFF to fire the coil.

LOCATION
Engine compartment, front of left strut tower.

OPERATION
A low voltage signal from the PCME turns the igniter ON. In this ON state, the igniter completes the coil primary circuit to ground, allowing current to flow through the coil. When the low voltage signal is interrupted, the igniter turns OFF, interrupting the ignition coil primary circuit and causing the coil to discharge.
Ignition timing is determined by the PCME depending on inputs from these sensors:

^ Crankshaft position sensor
^ Throttle position sensor
^ Engine coolant temperature sensor
^ Intake air temperature sensor
^ A/C signal
^ START signal
^ PCMT
^ Barometric absolute pressure sensor
^ Speedometer sensor
^ AAirflow sensor
^ EGR function sensor
^ Knock sensor
