Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Valve Spring: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Clean all parts, being sure to remove all gasket fragments, dirt and oil. Be careful not to damage the joints or friction surfaces of aluminum alloy components.

1. Inspect valve springs, retainers and keys for wear or damage. Discard any damaged parts.
2. Check springs (separated from dampers) for proper pressure at specified spring lengths. Replace any spring not within specifications. Pressure should be 71-79 lbs. at 1.52 inches. Free length of spring should be approximately 1.877 inches. Out-of-square limit is 0.078 inch. Make sure springs are assembled to their original dampers.
