Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
To provide the Ignition Control Module with an electronic signal that represents the crankshaft position during engine operation.

OPERATION
The Crankshaft Position Sensor sends a signal to the Ignition Control Module. The Ignition Control Module converts the signal into the "CAMSHAFT POSITION SIGNAL" which represents No. 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center.
The Camshaft Position Signal is used by the Powertrain Control Module as a signal input for ignition timing control via the Ignition Control Module.

CONSTRUCTION
The Crankshaft Position Sensor is a variable reluctance type sensor. It is triggered by a tooth trigger wheel configuration machined into the rear of the crankshaft dampener. The signal generated by this sensor is called a Variable Reluctance Sensor signal.
