Air Flow Meter/Sensor: Description and Operation

Volume Airflow Sensor:

PURPOSE
Measures airflow into the engine and sends a signal to the powertrain control module engine (PCME).

CONSTRUCTION
The volume airflow sensor is a sliding core type. It contains a measuring core in a large venturi, supported by a light spring. A sliding potentiometer is attached to the core which provides a variable resistance that coincides with core movement. The volume airflow sensor also contains an integral intake air temperature sensor which is not serviceable separately.

OPERATION
Incoming air moves the core in proportion to the volume of air (more air, more movement). As the core moves, the PCME reads the change in resistance through the potentiometer and calculates air volume entering the engine.
