Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

IDLE SWITCH

TPS Adjustment (Part 1):

NOTE: Throttle adjusting screw is factory set and should not be adjusted. Any adjustment will negatively affect engine performance.

1. Turn ignition OFF and make sure throttle valve is closed.
2. Unplug sensor connector and loosen sensor mount screws.
3. Rotate sensor to adjust continuity. With 0.012 in (0.3 mm) feeler gauge inserted as shown, there should be continuity across sensor terminals C and D. With 0.016 in (0.4 mm) gauge inserted, there should be no continuity.
4. Tighten sensor mount screws to 14 - 20 in lb (1.6 - 2.3 Nm).

VARIABLE RESISTOR

1. Remove PCME and connect Mazda SST or aftermarket equivalent.
2. Verify that throttle is fully closed and loosen sensor mount screws.
3. Turn ignition ON and measure PCME voltage at terminal 2M.
4. Turn sensor to adjust voltage. At throttle fully closed, it should be 0.1 - 1.1V. At wide open throttle, it should be 3.1 - 4.5V.
5. Tighten sensor mount screws. Verify that voltage increase is proportional to throttle valve opening angle.
6. If adjustment does not bring reading within specification, replace sensor.
