Timing Chain: Service and Repair

1. Drain cooling system and crankcase, then remove oil pan and radiator.
2. Remove engine front cover as outlined previously.
3. Remove water pump, refer to WATER PUMP.
4. Remove drive belt and crankshaft damper.
5. Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and sprocket key, refer to CAMSHAFT.
6. Remove crankshaft and camshaft sprockets with timing chain, Fig. 5.
7. Remove timing chain tensioner and guide bolts.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Position camshaft so timing mark will align with camshaft. Position crankshaft so timing mark will align with camshaft.
b. Install crankshaft key until timing marks on crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket are aligned as shown, Fig. 6.
c. Ensure tensioner side of timing chain is held inward, and guide side of chain is straight and tight.
