Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Timing Belt

CAUTION: The following will damage the belt and shorten its life:
^ Forcefully twisting it.
^ Turning it inside out.
^ Bending it.
^ Allowing oil or grease on it.

1. Turn the crankshaft and align the timing belt pulley mark with the timing mark. Do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.

2. Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks. E for exhaust side and I for intake side.

3. Install the timing belt so that there is no looseness at the idler side or between the camshaft pulleys.
4. Install the pulley boss and pulley lock bolt.
5. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise, and align the timing belt pulley mark with the timing mark. Do not turn the crankshaft counterclockwise.
6. Verify that the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks. If not aligned, remove the timing belt and repeat from tensioner installation.

7. Reverse the direction of the Special Service Tool (SST) on the flywheel if it has a Manual Transmission or on the driveplate if it has an Automatic Transmission.
8. Tighten the pulley lock bolt to a final torque of 157-166 Nm (116-122 ft. lbs.).

9. Turn the crankshaft 1 and 5/6 turns clockwise, and align the timing belt pulley mark with the tension set mark.
10. Loosen the tensioner lock bolt to apply tension to the timing belt. Be sure not to apply tension other than that of the tensioner spring.

11. Tighten the tensioner lock bolt to a torque of 38-51 Nm (28-38 ft. lbs.).
12. Turn the crankshaft 2 and 1/6 turns clockwise and verify that the timing marks are correctly aligned.

13. Measure the timing belt deflection by applying moderate pressure 98 Nm (22 lbs.) midway between the two camshaft pulleys.Deflection should measure 9.0-11.5 mm (0.36-0.45 inch). If the deflection is not correct, repeat from step 9 above.
