Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Expansion Valve: Service and Repair

THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

NOTE: Installation of a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the air conditioning system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.

1. Recover the refrigerant. See DISCHARGING AND RECOVERY.
2. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) fitting nut and disconnect the fitting.
- Discard the gasket seals.

3. Remove the 2 TXV bolts and the TXV.
- Discard the O-ring seals.

4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- If the TXV stud has become loose during removal, or has been removed for any reason, tighten the TXV stud to 6 N.m (0.6 kgf.m, 53 in.lbf) before the TXV fitting nut is reinstalled.
- Install new O-ring seals and gasket seals.

5. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. See AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM EVACUATION AND CHARGING.
