APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2009-2010 Tribute 2.5L

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may exhibit a MIL on with DTC(s) P1285 (Cylinder Head Over Temperature Condition), P1299 (Cylinder Head Over Temperature Protection Active) and/or P0128 (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature). Actual engine temperature and thermostat operation is normal. Engine cooling fan operation may also be affected.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This concern may be due to corrosion at connector 0140-119. Refer to MS3 online or Wiring Diagram (CONTROL SYSTEM - 2.5L).

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Inspect connector 0140-119 at cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor for evidence of water contamination.

a. If evidence of water contamination, proceed to Step 3.

b. If water contamination is not evident, do not continue with this procedure. Refer to MS3 online or Work-shop Manual (section 01-01 DTC INDEX - PCM).





3. If corrosion from water contamination is severe and terminals are rusted and disintegrated,

a. cut off connector 0140-119 and install a new pigtail connector. Refer to instruction sheet.

b. replace the CHT sensor. Refer to MS3 online or Workshop Manual (section 01-40 CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE (CHT) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 2.5L). Proceed to Step 5.

4. If corrosion is not severe, remove any water and thoroughly clean connector 0140-119 and the CHT sensor.

5. Add Mazda Electrical Grease to the CHT sensor and connector 0140-119. Attach connector to sensor.

NOTE:
Mazda Electrical Grease is required for this repair. This grease is designed to withstand high underhood temperatures which substitute material may not be able to withstand.

6. Verify repair.
