DTC U0074 Control Module Communication Bus Off - Local CAN (4JJ3 with DPD)

1. Engine control system check

Refer to "51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 with DPD) Diagnostic system check-engine controls".

2. Current DTC check

1) Connect the scan tool.

2) Turn OFF the ignition switch for 1 minute or more.

3) Start the engine.

4) Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Is a DTC set?

Note

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure.

Yes

=>Go to EGR valve inspection.

No

Go to Intermittent conditions of engine.

3. EGR valve inspection

1) Disconnect the EGR valve harness connector (E32).

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to "LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Is DTC U0074 not set but DTC U010A set?

Note

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

Yes

=>Go to EGR valve replacement.

No

=>Go to Turbocharger internal control unit inspection.

4. Turbocharger internal control unit inspection

1) Disconnect the turbocharger internal control unit harness connector (E17).

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to "LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

2) Turn ON the ignition switch.

3) Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Is DTC U0074 not set but DTC U0110 set?

Note

  • After checking, turn OFF the ignition switch, and go to the next procedure after connecting the disconnected harness connector.

Yes

=>Go to Turbocharger replacement.

No

=>Go to Inspection for short circuit in CAN circuit.

5. Inspection for short circuit in CAN circuit

1) Inspect the CAN High circuit and the CAN Low circuit between each control module for the following. Is the result normal?

  • Short together between the CAN High circuit and the CAN Low circuit
  • Short to ground
  • Short to the battery power supply circuit or short to the ignition power supply circuit

Refer to "LHD Controller Area Network (Central Gateway C/U)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to "LHD Controller Area Network (Except Central Gateway C/U)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to ECM harness connector inspection.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

6. ECM harness connector inspection

1) Inspect for poor connections at the ECM harness connector (pins 7 and 9 of C10). Is the connection status normal?

Refer to "RHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Refer to "LHD Engine Control (4JJ3 with DPD)" in the ETM (wiring diagram). (Open using the ETM viewer.).

Yes

=>Go to ECM replacement.

No

Repair the circuit as necessary.

=>Go to Repair verification.

7. EGR valve replacement

Refer to "1.Engine 1H.Aux. Emission Control Devices(4JJ3 with DPD) EGR valve removal".

Refer to "1.Engine 1H.Aux. Emission Control Devices(4JJ3 with DPD) EGR valve installation".

Procedure completion

=>Go to Repair verification.

8. Turbocharger replacement

Refer to "1.Engine 1F.Induction(4JJ3 with DPD) Turbocharger removal".

Refer to "1.Engine 1F.Induction(4JJ3 with DPD) Turbocharger installation".

Procedure completion

=>Go to Repair verification.

9. ECM replacement

Note

  • Perform programming after replacing the ECM.

Refer to "1.Engine 1Z.Engine Electrical Control(4JJ3 with DPD) ECM removal".

=>Go to Repair verification.

10. Repair verification

1) Clear the DTC with a scan tool.

2) Turn OFF the ignition switch for 1 minute or more.

3) Start the engine.

4) Operate the vehicle under the conditions for running the DTC.

5) Observe the DTC information with a scan tool.
