DTC P1404 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) 1 Closed Position Performance (4JJ3 without DPD)

1. DTC P1404 description

The EGR valve is equipped with a microprocessor. The internal microprocessor controls the EGR motor according to the commands from the ECM. The ECM calculates the desired EGR position based on the driving condition of the engine, and sends it to the EGR valve via CAN. The EGR valve lift amount is calculated by the microprocessor inside the EGR valve, and is sent to the ECM via CAN. If the ECM detects that the actual EGR valve opening position is higher than the predetermined value, the closed position error DTC is set. If the ECM detects a difference between the learned closed position and the actual closed position, the learned position error DTC is set.

2. Condition for setting DTC P1404

Condition for running the DTC

Closed position error DTC

  • The battery voltage is 10 to 16 V.
  • The ignition switch is ON.
  • The engine coolant temperature is 20 to 110°C {68 to 230°F}.
  • The intake air temperature is 0 to 110°C {32 to 230°F}.
  • The barometric pressure is 60 to 120 kPa {8.7 to 17.4 psi}.

Condition for setting the DTC

Closed position error DTC

  • The ECM detects that the difference between the actual and desired EGR valve opening position is 20% or more for 11 seconds or more.

Learned position error DTC

  • The ECM detects that the EGR learned position is 10% or more or -10% or less when the ignition switch is OFF.

3. Action taken when DTC P1404 sets

  • Euro4: The ECM illuminates the MIL. Refer to Action taken when DTC sets - Type A (Euro4).
  • Except Euro4: The ECM illuminates the check engine warning light. Refer to Action taken when DTC sets - Type A (Except Euro4).

Refer to "51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 without DPD) DTC type definitions".

  • The ECM limits the fuel injection quantity.
  • The ECM inhibits the EGR control.
  • The ECM inhibits the cruise control.

4. Condition for clearing DTC P1404

  • Euro4: Refer to Condition for clearing the MIL/DTC - Type A or Type B (Euro4).
  • Except Euro4: Refer to Condition for clearing the check engine warning light/DTC - Type A or Type B (Except Euro4).

Refer to "51.Engine Control 1A.Troubleshooting(4JJ3 without DPD) DTC type definitions".
