FRONT RADAR SENSOR [(E)]

id1511000060a4

Purpose

•  The front radar sensor emits millimeter waves*1 in front of the vehicle and detects a target object in front of the vehicle based on the reflected waves. The following systems control based on the target information from the front radar sensor.
―  Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go function (MRCC with Stop & Go function) (See MAZDA RADAR CRUISE CONTROL WITH STOP & GO FUNCTION (MRCC WITH STOP & GO FUNCTION).)
―  Cruising & traffic support (CTS) (See CRUISING & TRAFFIC SUPPORT (CTS) [(E)].)
―  Distance & speed alert (DSA) (See DISTANCE & SPEED ALERT (DSA).)
―  Smart brake support (SBS) [forward detection] (See SMART BRAKE SUPPORT (SBS) [FORWARD DETECTION].)
*1  :These radio waves, at a frequency of 30 to 300 GHz and a wavelength of 1 to 10 mm, possess a property in which the effect of rain and dirt is comparatively small and insusceptible to interference of other radio waves.

Function

•  The front radar sensor emits millimeter waves at an angle of approx. 45 degrees (total 90 degrees) left and right of the center from the front of the front radar sensor and detects objects up to a maximum of approx. 170 m {557 ft 9 in} from the front of the vehicle.
Note
•  The front radar sensor may not detect a vehicle or an obstruction ahead accurately under the following conditions.
―  Vehicle ahead is trailer carrying no load, or vehicle with loading platform covered by soft top, or has hard-plastic tailgate, round-shaped body, or rear part that may not reflect radio waves
―  Vehicle ahead has limited areas that can reflect radio waves, such as vehicle with low height
―  Front visibility is reduced due to vehicle ahead casting off water, snow, or sand
―  Heavy cargo is loaded in trunk, luggage compartment, or on rear seat
―  Ice, snow, or dirt is on surface of front emblem
―  When driving in rain, snow, or sand storms
―  When driving near facilities and buildings which emit strong radio waves
•  The front radar sensor may not detect a vehicle or an obstruction ahead under the following conditions.
―  When entering or exiting a curve
―  On road with continuous curves
―  Roads with narrow lanes due to road construction or lane closures
―  Vehicle ahead enters blind spot of radar unit
―  Vehicle ahead is driving under erratic conditions in which there is a surrounding accident or vehicle breakdown
―  Road with repetitive up and down slopes
―  Driving on poor roads or unpaved roads
―  Distance to vehicle ahead is extremely short
―  Distance to vehicle ahead suddenly shortens due to vehicle suddenly cutting into lane
•  The system may not operate normally if the lead-acid battery has deteriorated.

•  The front radar sensor calculates the target position, distance from the detecting vehicle, and relative speed based on the emitted and reflected radio waves, and detects them as target information.

On-board diagnostic function

•  The front radar sensor detects internal malfunctions of the front radar sensor and outputs DTCs.

Construction

•  The front radar sensor has an integrated transmitter which emits millimeter waves and an integrated receiver which receives reflected waves.
•  The front radar sensor is installed on the interior side of the radiator grille.

Operation

Target information detection

•  The front radar sensor emits millimeter waves from the front of the front radar sensor and detects a target object (vehicle ahead) in front of the vehicle based on the reflected waves. The front radar sensor calculates the target position, distance from the detecting vehicle, and relative speed based on the reflected waves and detect them as target information.
