CRUISING RANGE IS SHORT

id300300001100

Outline

Malfunction symptom

Cruising range is short

Description
•  The cruising range has become shorter than previous.
•  The remaining distance-to-full discharge displayed in the instrument cluster fluctuates considerably while the vehicle is being driven.
Possible cause
Note
•  Lithium-ion batteries used as high voltage batteries have the characteristic of gradually decreasing (deteriorating) their capacity as they are used.
•  The deterioration rate can be reduced by paying attention to the following.
When charging:
―  Avoid frequent charging as much as possible
―  Use normal charge instead of quick charge as much as possible
―  Do not always fully charge, only charge required amount
When parked:
―  Do not store vehicle at location where ambient temperature is extremely high or low
―  Do not leave vehicle when high voltage battery level is extremely low
When driving:
―  Avoid driving that uses large amounts of power within short time such as sudden acceleration
Driving that causes poor power consumption rate:
―  Driving vehicle under conditions that have greater impact on power consumption rate than previous (See POOR POWER CONSUMPTION RATE.)
High voltage battery deterioration:
―  Charging capacity decreases due to high voltage battery deterioration

Results

Action

1
DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY DETERIORATION OR POOR POWER CONSUMPTION RATE
•  Verify the average power consumption rate in the instrument cluster.
•  Is the average power consumption rate (km/kWh) lower than previous?
Yes
Perform troubleshooting according to [POOR POWER CONSUMPTION RATE].
No
Go to the next step.
2
VERIFY TEMPERATURE WHEN CHARGING
•  Verify with the customer the ambient temperature at the time of charging.
•  Is charging performed during low temperatures (below freezing) often?
Yes
Explain to the customer that charging efficiency decreases when charging during low temperatures.
No
Go to the next step.
3
VERIFY DISCHARGE CONDITION
•  Verify the high voltage battery level in the instrument cluster.
•  Is the high voltage battery level indication (---)?
Yes
Go to Step 5.
No
Go to the next step.
4
DISCHARGE HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY
•  Start the EV system.
•  Perform the following and discharge the high voltage battery until the high voltage battery level indication is (---).
―  Set air conditioner MAX COLD (windows fully open)
―  Turn on Headlights
―  Operate seat warmer and heated steering wheel
―  Operate rear window defroster
Go to the next step.
5
CHARGE HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY BY NORMAL CHARGE
•  Charge the high voltage battery by normal charge until the high voltage battery level indicator in the instrument cluster reaches 100%.
Go to the next step.
6
VERIFY EV SYSTEM RELATED DTCs
•  Perform the DTC inspections for the following modules.
―  PCM
―  BECM
―  Battery charge control module
•  Is a DTC displayed?
Yes
Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
No
Perform troubleshooting according to [POOR POWER CONSUMPTION RATE].
