Warning
<<High voltage>>
•  If the necessary measures are not taken before servicing an electric vehicle, it could cause electrical shock and result in serious injury or, in the worst case, death. Before servicing the electric vehicle, refer to [HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICE CAUTIONS] in the general information and implement the necessary measures. (See HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICE CAUTIONS.)

Outline

Malfunction symptom

Poor power consumption rate

Description
•  Power consumption rate is poor compared to the customer’s expectations or the previous power consumption.
Possible cause
Note
•  The perceived poor power consumption rate situation has two causes. It is either the condition of the vehicle or how the driver uses the vehicle. Among the two causes, the most likely one is how the driver uses the vehicle.
Power consumption rate of electric motor/inverter is high:
•  Driving resistance is large
―  Low tire pressure
―  Installation of tire, wheel other than specified size (oversized)
―  Brake drag
―  Electric parking brake system malfunction
―  Sliding resistance in EV transaxle is large
•  Driving in drive mode requiring heavy power consumption
―  Excess load
―  Acceleration/deceleration is too aggressive (in particular, when sudden deceleration is performed, higher ratio of hydraulic braking than regenerative braking, and regenerative braking amount decreases)
―  Driving frequently upslope
Power consumption of climate control system is high (cooling/heating efficiency is poor):
•  Set temperature is too high or too low
―  Set temperature is too low during cooling
―  Set temperature is too high during heating
―  Defogger switch is held pressed
•  Heat pump system malfunction (Heating only by high-power consumption PTC heater)
―  Heating only by high-power consumption PTC heater
―  Air intake actuator malfunction
•  Cabin preconditioning (climate control timer, remote climate control) cannot be used appropriately
―  Cabin preconditioning is operated without connecting charge connector
―  Actual departure time is later than departure time set using cabin preconditioning
•  Refrigerant pressure is high
―  Airflow does not hit condenser
―  Cooling fan malfunction
Note
•  When driving in cold temperatures, power consumption can be suppressed by using the seat warmers and heated steering wheel instead of the climate control system.
Battery heater system power consumption is high:
•  Battery heater control is operating during prolonged parking at extremely low temperatures
―  Prolonged parking at extremely low temperatures without connecting charge connector
―  Battery heater is constantly operating
Power consumption of vehicle electrical devices is high:
•  Use of after-market electrical accessories with high power consumption
•  Vehicle is stopped for long period under high electrical load condition (high voltage battery power used for long time other than for driving)
High voltage circuit efficiency decreases:
•  Poor installation of service plug (contact resistance high)
•  Service plug malfunction

Diagnostic Procedure

Warning
<<High voltage>>
•  If necessary measures such as wearing the correct protective gear are not taken when inspecting or removing/installing the high voltage parts, it could cause electrical shock and result in serious injury or, in the worst case, death.
•  Before inspecting or removing/installing the high voltage parts, refer to [HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICE CAUTIONS] in the general information and [High Voltage Part Inspection and Removal/Installation Notes] of the high voltage system service cautions and implement the necessary measures and preparations. (See HIGH VOLTAGE SERVICE CAUTIONS.) (See HIGH VOLTAGE SYSTEM SERVICE CAUTIONS.)

Step

Inspection

Results

Action

1
VERIFY ALL SYSTEM DTCs
Note
•  Using the M-MDS, display all module DTCs.
•  Perform the DTC inspection.
•  Are DTCs displayed?
Yes
Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
No
Go to the next step.
2
VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION SYMPTOM IS CAUSED BY OTHER MALFUNCTION OF EV SYSTEM
Note
•  There are few malfunctions affecting only a poor power consumption rate, therefore it is necessary to verify that other malfunctions are not appearing as symptoms.
•  Verify the EV system condition.
•  Are malfunction symptoms other than a poor power consumption rate occurring?
Yes
Perform malfunction diagnosis according to the applicable symptom troubleshooting.
No
Go to the next step.
3
VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM MALFUNCTION
•  Verify the effectiveness of the cooling/heating and the airflow mode operation.
•  Is there a problem with the effectiveness of the cooling/heating or the airflow mode operation?
Yes
Perform malfunction diagnosis according to the symptom troubleshooting for the full-auto air conditioner system.
No
Go to the next step.
4
VERIFY VEHICLE CONDITION
Warning
•  Observe legal speed limits when driving the vehicle and perform the procedure in a location where safety can be assured.
Note
•  Because the vehicle malfunction cannot be verified, it is necessary to inspect the items which may be affecting the power consumption rate.
•  Perform the following inspections.
―  Tire pressure
―  Brake drag
―  Electric parking brake system malfunction
―  Sliding resistance in EV transaxle (compare deceleration feel and free running distance in N position with another vehicle of same model, tire pressure and vehicle weight)
―  Condenser (Due to insufficient airflow, refrigerant pressure increases and load on electric compressor increases)
―  Cooling fan operation (Due to operation malfunction, enough air cannot be blown against condenser, causing refrigerant pressure to increase and load on electric compressor to increase)
•  Are all the items normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair or adjust the malfunctioning location and explain the repair contents to the customer based on the inspection result.
5
VERIFY SERVICE PLUG INSTALLATION CONDITION
Warning
<<High voltage>>
•  Wear insulating gloves when working on a high voltage system.
•  Wear insulating gloves and verify the service plug installation condition.
•  Is the service plug installation normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Verify the service plug terminal condition.
Terminal deformed/discoloration:
•  Wear insulating gloves, replace the service plug, and perform the repair completion verification.
Terminal deformation/no discoloration:
•  Wear insulating gloves, repair the service plug installation, and perform the repair completion verification.
6
INSPECT SERVICE PLUG FOR MALFUNCTION
Warning
<<High voltage>>
•  Wear insulating gloves when working on a high voltage system.
•  Wear insulating gloves and remove the service plug.
•  Inspect the service plug.
•  Is the service plug normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Wear insulating gloves, replace the service plug, and perform the repair completion verification.
7
VERIFY VEHICLE USE CONDITION
Note
•  It is necessary to ask the customer about how they use the vehicle because there is no problem with the inspection items from Step 1 to 6.
•  When driving in cold temperatures, power consumption can be suppressed by using the seat warmers and heated steering wheel instead of the climate control system.
•  Verify how the customer uses the vehicle with regard to the following applicable items, and provide the customer some pertinent advice.
―  Installation of tire, wheel other than specified size (oversized)
―  Excess load
―  Acceleration/deceleration is too aggressive (in particular, when sudden deceleration is performed, higher ratio of hydraulic braking than regenerative braking, and regenerative braking amount decreases)
―  Driving frequently upslope
―  Set temperature is too high or too low (high climate control system power consumption)
•  Set temperature is too low during cooling
•  Set temperature is too high during heating
•  Defogger switch is held pressed
―  Cabin preconditioning (climate control timer, remote climate control) cannot be used appropriately
•  Cabin preconditioning is operated without connecting charge connector
•  Actual departure time is later than departure time set using cabin preconditioning
―  Battery heater system operates during prolonged parking at extremely low temperatures (high battery heater power consumption)
