Abnormal message from EPS control module (steering column internal malfunction)

DETECTION CONDITION

•  U0428:00, U0428:64

―  The EPS control module detects signal modulation or steering angle that exceeds specification.

•  U0428:68

―  The neutral position of the steering angle cannot be estimated from the signals from the ABS wheel-speed sensors and the combined sensor.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

•  Improper installation or positioning of the steering column

•  Signal error from the ABS wheel-speed sensor

•  Signal error from the combined sensor

•  Signal errors from sensors due to rough road driving

•  Steering column internal malfunction

•  Poor connection at connectors (female terminal)

Diagnostic procedure

STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	INSPECT FOR EPS CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION • Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. • Using the M-MDS, perform the DTC inspection for the EPS control module. (See ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS.) • Is the DTC displayed?	Yes	Go to applicable DTC inspection. (See ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS.)
1		No	Go to the next step.
2	VERIFY THAT NO OTHER DTCS ARE PRESENT • Are any other DTCs output?	Yes	Go to the applicable DTC inspection. (See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSIS [DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (DSC)].)
2		No	DTC troubleshooting completed.
