Glow plug circuit malfunction

DETECTION CONDITION
•  The PCM monitors the glow plug relay signal. If the voltage at PCM deviates from the threshold, the PCM determines that the glow plug circuit has a malfunction.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Glow plug relay connector or terminal malfunction
•  Glow plug connector or terminal malfunction
•  Connector or terminal malfunction
•  Short to power supply in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and PCM terminal 132
•  Short to ground circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and PCM terminal 132
•  Short to ground circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal A
•  Short to ground circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal B
•  Short to ground circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal C
•  Short to ground circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal D
•  Glow plug relay malfunction
•  Glow plug malfunction
•  PCM connector or terminal malfunction
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and PCM terminal 132
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal A
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal B
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal C
•  Open circuit in wiring harness between glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal D
•  PCM malfunction

VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
•   Has the FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.

VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
•  Verify related service repair information availability.
•  Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
•   If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY RELATED PENDING CODE AND/OR DTC
•  Switch the ignition to ON (engine off).
•  Perform the Pending Trouble Code Access Procedure and DTC Reading Procedure.
•  Is the other PENDING CODE/DTC also present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG RELAY CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION
•  Switch the ignition to OFF.
•  Disconnect the glow plug relay connector.
•  Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the terminal, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION
•  Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out terminals, corrosion).
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the suspected terminal, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG RELAY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER SUPPLY
•  Switch the ignition to ON.
•  Measure the voltage at the glow plug relay terminal C (wiring harness-side).
•  Is the voltage B+?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to power supply, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG RELAY SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
•  Disconnect the glow plug relay connector.
•  Switch the ignition to OFF.
•  Inspect for continuity between glow plug relay terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG RELAY
•  Inspect the glow plug relay.
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace the glow plug relay, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG
•  Inspect the glow plug.
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Replace the glow plug, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR CONDITION
•  Disconnect the PCM connector.
•  Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion)
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the connector and/or terminals, then go to Step 12.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT GLOW PLUG RELAY CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT
•  Inspect for continuity between the following terminals:
―  Glow plug relay terminal C and PCM terminal 132
―  Glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal A
―  Glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal B
―  Glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal C
―  Glow plug relay terminal C and glow plug terminal D
•  Is there continuity?
Yes
Go to the next step
No
Repair or replace the wiring harness for an open circuit, then go to the next step.
12
VERIFY THAT DTC P0380 TROUBLESHOOTING IS COMPLETED
•  Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
•  Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
•  Run the vehicle under the FREEZE FRAME DATA stored condition.
•  Is the same DTC present?
Yes
Repeat the inspection from Step 1.
•  If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM.
Go to the next step.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
•  Perform the after repair procedure.
•  Are any DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
DTC troubleshooting completed.
