Will not crank

DESCRIPTION
•  Engine does not crank.
•  Engine does not crank and glow indicator light is flashing.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
•  Keyless entry system and start system malfunction
•  Immobilizer system malfunction
•  PCM DTC is detected.
•  Battery malfunction
•  Main relay malfunction
•  Starting system malfunction
―  Starter relay malfunction
―  Starter motor malfunction
•  Ignition switch malfunction
•  PCM malfunction

DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM AND START SYSTEM OR OTHER
Note
•  The following test should be perform on the keyless entry system and start system. If not equipped, go to the next step.
•  Start the engine using the mechanical ignition key.
•  Does the engine start?
Yes
Inspect the keyless entry system and start system.
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM DTC
Note
•  The following test should be performed for vehicles with immobilizer system. Go to the next step for vehicles without immobilizer system.
•  Are any DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
Go to the next step.

VERIFY PCM DTC
•  Perform the PCM DTC inspection using the M-MDS.
•  Are any DTCs present?
Yes
Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
No
Go to the next step.

VISUALLY INSPECT RELATED PART CONDITION
•  Visually inspect the following:
Mechanical:
―  Air cleaner element
―  Vacuum line(s)/vacuum connections
―  Hose(s)/hose connections
―  Tube(s)/tube connections
―  Coolant leaks
―  Oil leaks
―  Fuel system leaks (Fuel filter, fuel supply line(s), fuel return line(s), high-pressure fuel supply line(s), fuel injectors, fuel rail, supply pump)
―  Visibly damaged or worn parts
―  Loose or missing nuts or bolts
―  Contaminated fuel
Electrical:
―  Fuse(s)
―  Relay(s)
―  Loose or corroded connector(s) (PCM, sensor(s), switch(es))
―  Damaged or worn PCM, switch(es) and/or sensor(s)
―  Wiring harness
•  Is there any malfunction?
Yes
Repair or replace the malfunctioning part according to the inspection results.
Repeat Step 4.
No
Go to the next step.

INSPECT POWER SUPPLY
•  Inspect the following:
―  Battery connection
―  Battery condition
•  Are all items normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Recharge or replace the battery as necessary.

INSPECT RELAY OPERATION
•  Inspect the following relays:
―  Main relay
―  Starter relay
•  Are relays normal?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace the malfunctioning relay.

INSPECT IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS STARTER OR IGNITION SWITCH
•  Inspect the starter.
•  Is the starter normal?
Yes
Inspect the ignition switch.
Replace the ignition switch as necessary.
No
Repair or replace malfunctioning part according to inspection results.

Verify test results.
•  If normal, return to the diagnostic index to service any additional symptoms.
•  If the malfunction remains, inspect the related Service Information and perform the repair or diagnosis.
―  If the vehicle is repaired, troubleshooting is completed.
―  If the vehicle is not repaired or additional diagnostic information is not available, reprogram the PCM if a later calibration is available. Retest.
