1.  Remove the steering gear and linkage. (See STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L.H.D.].) (See STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [R.H.D.].)

2.  Measure the pinion shaft rotational torque using the SST and a pull scale.

Pinion shaft rotation torque
1.4—2.3 N·m {15—23 kgf·cm, 13—20 in·lbf} [Pull scale reading: 14—23 N {1.5—2.3 kgf, 3.2—5.1 lbf}]

•  If not within the specification, adjustment the steering gear. (See STEERING GEAR AND LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT.)
