DTC P0403

EGR solenoid valve circuit malfunction

DETECTION CONDITION

• The PCM monitors the EGR solenoid valve control circuit voltage at PCM terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.). If the PCM detects that the EGR solenoid valve circuit voltage is either too high or too low when compared to the expended voltage range, the PCM determines that the EGR solenoid valve circuit has malfunction.

POSSIBLE CAUSE

• Open circuit in wiring between EGR solenoid valve terminal 2 and PCM terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.)
• Open circuit in wiring between EGR solenoid valve terminal 1 and main relay
• Short to power in wiring between EGR solenoid valve terminal 2 and PCM terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.)
• Short to GND in wiring between EGR solenoid valve terminal 2 and PCM terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.)
• Damaged EGR solenoid valve
• Damaged PCM

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

1
VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
• Has FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Record the FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to next step.
2
VERIFY REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
• Verify related service repair information availability.
• Is any related repair information available?
Yes
Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
• If the vehicle is not repaired, go to next step.
No
Go to the next step.
3
INDETIFY TRIGGER DTC FOR FEEZE FRAME DATA
• Is DTC P0403 on FREEZE FRAME DATA?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to FREEZE FRAME DATA DTC inspection.
4
PERFORM KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) SELF TEST
• Perform KOEO self test.
• Is DTC P0403 displayed?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Go to Step 9.
5
CHECK EGR SOLENOID VALVE RESISTANCE
• Disconnect EGR solenoid valve.
• Measure EGR solenoid valve terminals resistance at the component side connector.
• Is the resistance 26-40 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace EGR solenoid valve, then go to Step 11.
6
CHECK VPWR VOLTAGE TO EGR SOLENOID VALVE
• Turn the ignition switch to ON.
• Measure voltage between EGR solenoid valve terminal 1 and chassis ground.
• Is voltage greater than 10.5 V?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair open circuit, then go to Step 11.
7
CHECK EGR SOLENOID VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN IN HARNESS
• Disconnect PCM.
• Turn the ignition switch to ON.
• Measure resistance of EGR solenoid valve control circuit between PCM terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.) and EGR solenoid valve terminal 2 at harness side connectors.
• Is resistance less than 5.0 ohms?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Repair for open circuit, then go to Step 11.
8
CHECK EGR SOLENOID VALVE CONTROL CIECUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER IN HARNESS
• Turn the ignition switch to ON.
• Measure voltage between PCM harness side connector terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.) and battery negative post.
• Is voltage less than 1.0 V?
Yes
Go to the next step.
No
Replace short to power circuit, then go to Step 11.
9
CHECK EGR SOLENOID VALVE CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORT TO GROUND IN HARNESS
• Measure resistance between terminal 47 (R.H.D.) /E-27 (L.H.D.) and 24, 51, 76, 103 (R.H.D.) /C-48, C-49 (L.H.D.) at PCM harness side connector.
• Is resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
Replace PCM, then go to Step 11.
No
Repair short to ground circuit, then go to Step 11.
10
WIGGLE EGR SOLENOID VALVE WHILE MOITORING VPWR
• Disconnect PCM.
• Turn the ignition switch to ON.
• Measure voltage between EGR solenoid valve terminal 2 and 24, 51, 76, 103 (R.H.D.) /C-48, C-49 (L.H.D.) at PCM harness side connector.
• Voltage must read greater than 10.5 V. For an indication of a fault, look for this voltage to drop while performing the following:
- Lightly tap EGR solenoid valve.
- Wiggle the EGR solenoid valve connector.
- Grasp the EGR solenoid valve harness
• Is a fault indicated?
Yes
Isolate fault and repair or replace malfunctioning part, then go to the next step.
No
Intermittent concern exists, go to Intermittent Troubleshooting Procedure.
