Removal

All vehicles

Note
• When installing a new wheel knuckle, install a new wheel bearing.

1. Remove the brake shoes, wheel cylinder component, and push rod component. Refer to Section 04-11.

2WD

1. Remove the wheel hub nut.

4WD

1. Remove the locknut.

Vehicles with ABS

1. Position the ABS sensor out of the way.

(1) Remove the ABS sensor bolt and the bracket bolts.
(2) Position the ABS sensor out of the way.

All vehicles

1. Disconnect the parking brake cable.

• Remove the parking brake cable bolt from the wheel knuckle.

2. Disconnect the brake line from the wheel cylinder.

• Remove the brake line bracket bolt.

3. Support the wheel knuckle.

4. Remove the lower shock absorber nut.

5. Remve the lower ball joint.

• Remove the nut.
Note
• Hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.

6. Remove the upper ball joint.

• Remove the nut.
Note
• Hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.

7. Remove the spring.

• Remove the support to the wheel knuckle.
Note
• Mark the position of the spring insulator and the spring for installation.

8. Remove the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

(1) Mark the position of the adjustment cam notch.
(2) Remove the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

9. Remove the wheel knuckle.

(1) Remove the wheel knuckle cam.
(2) Remove the wheel knuckle.

10. Remove the wheel hub from the wheel knuckle using the SSTs.

11. Remove the snap ring.

12. Remove the wheel bearing from the wheel knuckle using the SSTs.

Installation

All vehicles

1. Install a new wheel bearing to the wheel knuckle using the SSTs.

2. Install the snap ring to the wheel knuckle.

3. Install the wheel hub to the wheel knuckle using the SSTs.

4. Position the wheel knuckle and install the wheel knuckle cam.

• Position the drive shaft into the wheel hub.

5. Temporarily tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

6. Support the wheel knuckle and install the spring.

7. Install the lower shock absorber nut.

8. Install the upper ball joint.

• Install the nut.

9. Install the lower ball joint.

• Install the nut.

10. Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

(1) Align the wheel knuckle cam.
(2) Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

11. Install the brake line to the wheel cylinder.

• Install the brake line bracket bolt.

12. Install the parking brake cable to the brake backing plate.

(1) Install the bolt.
(2) Install the parking brake cable to the brake backing plate.

Vehicles with ABS

1. Install the ABS sensor and the bracket bolts.

• Install the bolt.

2WD

1. Install the wheel hub nut.

• Install the bolt.

4WD

1. Install the locknut.

• Install the bolt.

All vehicles

1. Install the brake shoes, wheel cylinder component, and push rod component. (See BRAKE DRUM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

2. Bleed the brake system. (See AIR BLEEDING (BRAKE SYSTEM).)

3. Inspect and adjust the wheel alignment if necessary. (See REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT.)
