Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Checking Refrigerant Level

CHECKING REFRIGERANT LEVEL:

Sight Glass - Receiver Dehydrator:

1. Clean sight glass (arrow) on receiver.

Coolant Temperature Sensor (B10/8):

2. Disconnect plug from coolant temperature sensor for air conditioning (B10/8) and bridge plug from temperature sensor (B10/8).
3. Allow engine to idle, switch on automatic climate control.
4. Observe sight glass and simultaneously remove bridge plug from coolant temperature sensor for air conditioning (B10/8). The refrigerant must rise shortly after switching on the electromagnetic charge and then flow without any bubbles (i.e. coolant no longer visible).

NOTE: It is not possible to check the capacity exactly at the sight glass. At higher ambient temperatures (>35°C) some bubbles may appear even with the correct capacity.

5. In the event of refrigerant loss or suspected leaks in the system, the correct capacity is only ensured after completely emptying (recycling) and refilling the system, after checking the system for leaks. A correct capacity can only be achieved by weighing the refrigerant or by the use of a filling cylinder or automatic air conditioner filling equipment. Note the latest information concerning correct capacity.
