The NTC resistor (3) integrated in the coolant temperature sensor (B11/3) alters its electrical resistance in line with the coolant temperature. NTC means negative temperature coefficient, in other words the electrical resistance (R) becomes less as the temperature (T) rises.

Example:
Coolant temperature Resistance
20 degrees C 2500 Ohms ±5%
80 degrees C 300 Ohms ±5%
