GF82.70-P-2014RC Short Message Service (SMS), Function
- with CODE (386) Mobile phone

Function requirements
^ Status "Circuit 30 ON" or "Circuit 15R ON"
^ One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ Mobile phone and "audio unit" switched on
^ Compatible mobile phone inserted into UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface) (A34/15), which is connected to Bluetooth module (A34/7) (comfort telephony), or Bluetooth-capable mobile phone authorized in vehicle and at "audio equipment" (basic telephony)
^ Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone

Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (A2), with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio or with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio or with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer

To be able to operate a Bluetooth-capable mobile phone authorized at "audio equipment" in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

General
The user has a facility for managing his SMS messages (e.g. reading or deleting) in the form of the Short Message Service (SMS) application. For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are transmitted to the "audio unit".
The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receiving SMS
- Receiving SMS messages via the display of the mobile phone and the display on the "audio equipment"
- Deleting SMS
- Reading SMS aloud (Text to Speech (TTS), German or English)
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)

The "Short Message Service (SMS)" function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Upload function sequence of existing SMS to "audio unit"
^ Function sequence for receiving SMS
^ Function sequence for calling up SMS application
^ Function sequence for reading SMS
^ Function sequence for composing and sending SMS
^ Read function sequence for SMS aloud

The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol.

Upload function sequence of existing SMS to "audio unit"
The SMS already stored in the mobile phone are transmitted from the mobile phone to the "audio control unit" in the following way:
- Cradle
- Bluetooth module
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Direct line

Function sequence for receiving SMS
Incoming SMS are received by the "audio unit" via the following way:
- Rod antenna (A28)
- Direct line
- Left antenna amplifier module (A2/64)
- Direct line
- Cradle
- Bluetooth module
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line

Function sequence for calling up SMS application
The SMS application for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) the SMS is selected via the "ComTEL/Telephone" menu item; this takes place with the aid of the telephone button "TEL" on the "audio unit", and is then displayed on the "audio unit's" screen. The control signals of the telephone keys and the keypad on the "audio unit" are processed internally.

Function sequence for reading SMS
The SMS messages are displayed by the "audio equipment" on the display of the "audio equipment". Next the keypad on the "audio unit" is used to call up the SMS entry in the function bar of the display on the "audio unit". Additionally, the SMS messages are displayed by the "audio equipment" on the display of the mobile phone in the following way:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Bluetooth module
- Cradle

Function sequence for composing and sending SMS
It is only possible to read and send SMS messages via the buttons on the mobile phone.

The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally. The SMS is then sent to the recipient in the following way:
- Cradle
- Direct line
- Left antenna amplifier module
- Direct line
- Rod antenna

Read function sequence for SMS aloud
The SMS voice output in vehicles with code (810) Sound system is transmitted by the "audio unit" via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3). From there, the voice output of the SMS takes place via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group (H4/1)
- Right door speaker group (H4/2)
- Left rear speaker (H4/7)
- Right rear speaker (H4/8)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Left door tweeter (H4/33)
- Right door tweeter (H4/34)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)

In vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the SMS voice output is transmitted by the "audio unit" via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left door speaker group
- Right door speaker group
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left door tweeter
- Right door tweeter
